Dr. Pascal Magne, DMD, MSc, PhD

Biography

Dr. Pascal Magne graduated from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, in 1989 with a Med Dent degree and was offered a position as a lecturer at the Geneva dental school, where he practiced and received further training in fixed prosthodontics and other technical skills. He went on to earn two doctorates, a DMD in 1992 and a PhD in 2002.

Before he finished dental school, he had been drawn to the lifelike porcelain restorations made by his older brother, Michel Magne, then the in-house technician for a dentist. In 1991 he began working with Claude Sieber using a new dental porcelain developed with Vita, which he has called a turning point: "For the first time I could see the porcelain of a master inside of the mouth of my own patients."

From 1997 to 1999 he was a visiting associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, then returned to Geneva as senior lecturer in Fixed Prosthodontics and Occlusion. In 2002 he and his mentor, Professor Urs Belser, published Bonded Porcelain Restorations in the Anterior Dentition: A Biomimetic Approach, later translated into 12 languages. The same year he received the Young Investigator Award of the International Association for Dental Research.

In 2004 he joined the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC as full-time tenured faculty and Don and Sybil Harrington Professor of Esthetic Dentistry. His years at USC produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications and over 200 continuing education programs in the United States and abroad, along with curricular work in biomimetics, minimally invasive dentistry and bonding techniques. From 2012 to 2020 he was preclinical director of the Dental Morphology, Function and Esthetics module, for which he developed a 2D, 3D and 4D approach to teaching dental morphology. The Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics named him its Distinguished Lecturer for 2016, and the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry gave him Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Awards in 2007, 2009 and 2018.

In 2021 he and Urs Belser published the second edition, Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry, an 888 page, two volume work now available in 10 languages. In 2022 he joined Beverly Hills Dental Laboratory as Director of Magne Education, its Center for Education and Research in Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry (CER BRD).

At Magne Education he teaches the Magne Continuum hands-on courses, the porcelain veneers live patient course, the monthly Magne PRESSroom online lectures in English and Spanish, a library of 17 on-demand courses and one-to-one mentoring sessions. He is scheduled to close the 2027 Magne Symposium in Miami, March 5 to 6, 2027, with the lecture "Celebrating 30 Years Of Biomimetic Restorative Dentistry".
