NATURE × TECHNOLOGY From Tooth Morphology to Digital Esthetic Design

IN A NUTSHELL: With the natural tooth as the ultimate reference, this module explores morphology, biomechanics, function, occlusion, esthetics, and aging through a 2D-to-3D approach, from drawing to analog and digital wax-ups. Dynamic smile balance and facial integration are developed using the 14-point Esthetic Checklist, Dentofacial Digital Diagnostic, exocad Smile Creator, and 3D printing.

Biomimetic restorative dentistry implies copying a model the natural tooth and the stomatognathic system as a reference. Hence, this module focuses on developing a deep understanding of biomechanics, tooth-by-tooth morphology, function and occlusion, esthetics, and the effects of aging.

A didactic 2D-to-3D approach, progressing from drawing to both analog and digital wax-ups, is used to develop an appreciation of tooth form and morphology. This is complemented by the presentation of the 14-point “Esthetic Checklist” for systematic smile integration. The discussion then moves beyond static esthetics and the concept of the symmetric, so-called “perfect” smile, to explore dynamic smile balance and the management of visual tensions.

The integration of the smile within the individual face, including facial characteristics and personality, is explored using Dentofacial Digital Diagnostic (DDD), exocad Smile Creator, and 3D-printing technologies.

Who should attend: New and experienced dentists and dental technicians.
